Gear Review: Grab It Pack
By MBT Staff

Why didn't we think of this?

Hip holster? Pack? You decide.

Storage space; something we spend so little time thinking about yet this commodity can make or break the best of us miles from civilization (when most all component failures tend to strike). While cars boast trunk space ships have holds, we lowly mountain bikers are typically left with only that which can be strapped, tried, or taped to our bikes or person. While many of us chose the convenience of onboard hydration-pack compartments (see our review of the Dakine Apex elsewhere in the issue), the dilemma often comes when we want to take a quick spin or a test ride on a well-known loop. The full backpack design is cumbersome and restrictive but we still need to find a place for the cell phone, car keys, wallet, etc. Enter the Grab It Pack- a simple/ clean design that somehow manages to dazzle with function. After a few days of using one of these babies, the MBT test crew unanimously came upon one simple question: Why didn’t I think of that?!

The Grab It Pack is a water resistant Cordura Nylon pack that functions very much like fanny packs of yore with one very unique design implementation that makes all the difference in the world: the addition of a leg strap. Not only does it fasten across the waist with an adjustable (up to 43”) locking band, the Grab It Pack offers up a second locking strap that fastens around the thigh. Sounds simple enough but make no mistake- this second point of fasten allows the unit to bend naturally with your body rather than flop around.

We were surprised at how non-intrusive the pack was even in the saddle (when your legs are constantly moving up and down). It even works when running or jogging; areas where the typical fanny pack design has always been known to fail. The company designates the pockets as follows:

Cell Phone Pocket Measures 5" x 4" x 1" w/ velcro fastener

Wallet Pocket Measures: 9" x 5.5" x 1.5" w/ velcro fastener and buckle

Key Pocket Measures: 7.5" x 4" x 1.5" w/zipper

In truth there are near limitless uses for the various pockets and compartments. We found the key pocket also works very well for sunglasses transportation and the (larger) wallet pocket allowed for perfect storage of a juice box or small water bottle, multitool, patch-kit etc.

All in all this is a very handy item that works well and succeeds based on the simplicity of its design. It’s available in any color (so long as its black) and is being blown out for $19 a pop (plus shipping) direct from the manufacturer. We’ve been very pleased with ours these things make a great gift to boot!
