What It Is
The Joby Flash Clamp & Locking Arm is a lightweight clamp for mounting remote flashes or LED light panels to almost anything in your shooting environment. Quick and easy to assemble, the it can be clamped to almost any edge. Once securely tightened, your flash slips right into place and you're ready to go. The top of the clamp has a universal 1/4"-20 tripod screw and a come with a removable universal flash shoe. The combination of these two mounting options allow you to use any of your remote flash accessories. Weighing in at just about 130 grams (or 4.5 oz) this thing is pretty lightweight considering the weight of the flash it is designed to hold. Although it is lightweight, the heavy duty plastic construction made it strong enough to secure my flash to anything I could find.
What I Think
I think the Joby Flash Clamp & Locking Arm is a great little device! It is the prefect solution for lighting up angles that would be far too cramped to set up a full-size flash stand. It is also great on days when you are packing light and hitting the trails.
A camera and flash have always fit easily into my backpack for capturing the perfect moment while on the trail but with no room for a bulky flash stand, I have always resorted to sticking my flash in the dirt or wedging it into the trees. Clearly this is not ideal both from a durability standpoint for the poor flash as well as for optimum lighting in the shot. With the Joby Flash Clamp & Locking Arm, not only can I finally get my flash up and out the dirt, but I also have the adjustability to point my light exactly where I want it. Score on two fronts!
While the Joby Flash Clamp & Locking Arm may not be something I would use on every shoot, it is so small, lightweight and useful that it has earned a permanent spot in my camera bag. Its ability to fit into small places and go where no other flash mount can go gives me comfort knowing that I will always have enough light for the perfect shot.
