Seems like every week this fall and early winter I see the same 10 Day
forecast for Austin, TX. Maybe some rain Thursday, definitely rain Friday, topped
with scattered thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday. That kind of weather is
guaranteed to bring mud slicked trails to every corner of the region and is a major
buzz kill to the ill-prepared. Dry creeks suddenly fill and trails are covered with mud
and guaranteed to have multiple water crossings. So needless to say a good pair of
gaiters go a long way to keeping an outdoorsman on the trail in these conditions and
the Hillsound Armadillo LT Gaiters have proven to be a useful tool this wet season.
The Hillsound gaiters fit over my Solomon Quest hiking boots with a snug
seal via an adjustable arch strap and waterproof YKK zipper. The zipper has a large
handle attached making it useable with a gloved hand. A small hook at the bottom of
the gaiter secures to boot laces and an adjustable strap at the top constricts around
the calves to prevent sagging. The lower portion of the gaiter is a dense nylon for
great protection from low brush and under water surprises. The upper portion is a
flexible membrane that allows plenty of air but no water. My boots are very water
resistant but occasionally the water gets high enough to penetrate the top of the
boot. With the Hillsound Armadillo LTs I can confidently get well above the boot
with no water penetration. If these gaiters work as well against snow as they do in
mud and water they will be helpful on the mountains to keep you dry and
comfortable. These gaiters have made a wet winter a more enjoyable adventure and
will definitely be in the pack for upcoming trips to Colorado.
